The Instituto del Mar, Capitan Williams is a technical school operated by the non profit foundation "Almirante Carlos Condell”. The school is located in the Archipelago of Chiloé, in the Southern part of Chile. The school offers technical education to young people (200 girls and 700 boys) in the maritime sciences, aquaculture, feed technology, sea food processing and traditional fisheries. The Institute is located in Region X of Chile where 90% of this country’s aquaculture industry is located. This industry has very active Norwegian business participation. The school main objective is to prepare the student in order to enter the local aquaculture and maritime industries. The “Instituto del Mar” is the only school in this island providing aquaculture and maritime education to the local community that is mostly indigenous of the Huilliche and Cuncos tribes. The Cuncos who were expert sailors, later merged with the Huilliches who now are the inhabitants of the Chiloe Archipelago. |
